Usborne Book Reviews I did these book reviews for a book fair at my school. I hope you like them as much as i did! Happy Reading! Penny Dreadful Causes a Kerfuffle Ages: 6-11 Author: Joanna Nadin Stars: 4 Ideas need to be thought through first and Penny knows that, but she still isn’t very good at doing it. Penny Dreadful is a problem and everyone, I mean EVERYONE, knows it. Her principal, her parents, her teachers and her friends. In her words, she is a “magnet for disaster.” Problems get bigger when she does experiments… and that happens often. Her “brilliant ideas” are always a recipe for disaster. This funny and interesting story tells the tale of the one and only Penny Dreadful. This story had me giggling and gasping the whole way through. The side pictures helped me understand what was happening. This book is just one in a series of Penny Dreadful tales and I want to try and read more of them. I hope you feel the same too! Happy Reading! The Four-Fingered Man Ages: 5-12 Author: Cerberus Jones Stars: 5 Genre: Action/Adventure/Mystery Moving is almost always hard, but to the creepy old hotel the Walkers are moving to, staying in is going to be harder. After Amelia’s parents buy an old hotel in Forgotten Bay, a mystery appears. Odd things begin to happen, like a hotel guest who arrives, before they open, just to sunbathe when there’s a beach available. When Amelia sees the previous owner, who happens to have four fingers, steal from their customer she and her friend play detective to figure out why. This is the first of many small mysteries Amelia and her friend try to solve. This mysterious tale of two friends trying to solve mysteries is sure to have you on the edge of your seat. The Four-Fingered Man is an action filled adventure that left me screaming in my head and gasping out loud. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did. Happy Reading! I am Jack Author: Susanne Gervay Ages: 7-12 Stars: 5 Sometimes you need to tell your parents what’s happening at school, but Jack thinks he is better off not. Jack is a boy who loves school, his family and photography. But his love of school soon turns to dread when a big bully, George, starts calling Jack “Butt-Head.” Soon all the kids are calling him this terrible nickname and he is having a hard time figuring out what to do. His mom is too busy, and he doesn’t have a dad. He also does not want to be called a tattletale. This story is sure to be a favorite as the last page turns. This story is full of life lessons. This book made me emotional, both sad and angry. I know that when you feel emotional during books they are truly good books. I hope you treasure this book and the lessons it teaches as much as I did! Happy Reading! Fairy Unicorns Magic Forest Ages: 6-10 Author: Zanna Davidson Stars: 4 When Zoe sees her cousin Holly sneak out at night, she decides to go along. While staying at her great-aunt’s house Zoe discovers a magical world full of unicorns. She also learns that Unicorn Island is in trouble. The Unicorn Kingdom has been captured and is being held prisoner. As if that isn’t enough, all the trees are dying and it seems there is nothing the fairy unicorns can do about it. This magical story is a tale about bravery, magic and most importantly…friendship. This book didn’t necessarily fall into my “favorites” section but I still found it an awesome book. I think this book is more appropriate for younger readers. Happy Reading!

I had a request from someone that wanted book ideas for younger readers, so I decided to do a list of some books I liked when I was little.
The Pigeon Series (K-1st) This funny series by Mo Williams is great for kindergarteners and first graders. They are stories of Pigeon and the crazy activities he tries to do like drive a bus or get a walrus. I mean...he's a Pigeon! Piggie and Elephant (K-1st) These silly stories of friendship between Piggie and Elephant are sure to be a book series that will become a household favorite. These are great good-night stories or a book to just snuggle up and read out loud. Angelina Ballerina{K- 2nd} This series is a good one for dance lovers. These are stories of a mouse (who acts like a human) who loves ballet. Dr. Seuss Books{ Read Aloud or 2nd and up} These are great read aloud books for parents or older siblings to read to younger readers. Dr. Seuss books are really fun but they have complicated tongue twisters. Its a win-win because you get some quality time together. Books by Eric Carle (preschool - K) this author has many famous picture books, like: The Very Hungry Caterpillar Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The Grouchy Ladybug Stars: 5
Author: Roald Dahl Ages: 8-12 When you live in a very small, old, wooden house, chances are low that you will win one of five golden tickets to an extraordinary candy factory. When Charlie Bucket wins a golden ticket, he is more surprised than anyone! Charlie, a poor child eating cabbage soup for every meal, never even dared dream about winning one of the five golden tickets to Willy Wonka's factory. Just as it says on the ticket, tremendous things are in store for Charlie. Discovering secrets along the way, this story has as many surprises as the chocolate factory itself. The surprise ending is going to have you on the edge of your seat when Mr. Willy Wonka tells Charlie the best surprise anyone can get. Your mouth will be watering as this scrum-diddly-umptious story continues. This book is one of my all time favorites. Full of surprises, Roald Dahl's most famous book tells the tale of am amazing boy. Roald Dahl is probably my favorite author. I hope you cherish this book as much as I do. Happy Reading! Ages: 6-12
Stars: 5 Author: Mary Pope Osborne Shhhhhhhh!!! Maggie just walked away from her computer. Shhhhh!!! Don't tell Maggie but she still has not reviewed one of MY favorite series...Magic Treehouse! I am Sydney and I am 7...almost 8. I'm Maggie's younger sister and I love reading also! Magic Treehouse wasn't one of Maggie's favorites and so I've decided to review it because I just can't get enough of this series. In this series, you will meet Jack and Annie. Jack is 8 and loves to read. (sound familiar?) Annie is 7 and is always friendly with animals they meet. Every kid dreams about having a magic treehouse like Jack and Annie. Jack and Annie begin every adventure with a trip to their treehouse and making a wish on a book to travel somewhere. They have to solve mysteries along the way and get mixed up in so many fun adventures. But, some are worse than others. What I like best about this series is I learn facts about people and places while reading fiction which makes it fun. So many of my friends and classmates like this series too and I highly recommend it! I think you should try and read this series in order because it makes more sense understanding their story. I hope you liked my review and remember - don't tell Maggie I was here! BYE!!!! Ages: 9-13
Author: Neil Patrick Harrison Stars: 4 When your being raised by a thief, you know different escape plans, like how to get on the top of a moving train. Carter knows that he doesn't want to waste his life watching his uncle steal from perfectly nice people, so thats why he decides to run away. After running away from his mean uncle, Carter never expected to find friends and amazing magic in a tiny, quiet, New England town. But he had no idea that trouble would follow him. When evil B B. Basso and his crew arrive, Carter discovers that they are mad stealing machines. But things get bigger when B. B. Basso tries to switch the largest diamond with a fake one. Mean Mr. Basso doesn't know that Carter and his team of friends aren't falling for his nasty tricks. This magic filled book has some tricks up its sleeve as the Magic Misfits continue their adventure. This book is definitely an amazing book, but it did not have me as hooked as the other books i have reviewed. This book is still a great book, but it was definitely not my all time favorite. Happy Reading! Author: Elizabeth Enright
Ages: 8-13 Stars: 5 Saturdays are often said to be ''the best day of the week'', yet there usually not much to do. But with the Melendy children, its a whole different story. When the four Melendy children agree on Randy's idea for a club, they decide to name it the Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club( I.S.A.A.C.). Each Saturday they add their allowances together so they each can have at least one memorable Saturday. Some problems quickly appear, and whether its a fire or spending the summer at a lighthouse with no light, the family of six will always stick together. This heartwarming book will fill your eyes with tears, but also have you giggling as the Saturdays story continues. This book is a book I have read a few times because I love it so much. It's the most heartwarming book. If you liked Land of Stories or the Vanderbeekers, you will definitely cherish this book forever. Happy Reading! Author: Peg Kehret
Ages: 8-12 Stars: 5! Genre: Action/Adventure Amy's babysitting course taught everything from first aid to putting a child to bed, but she never learned what to do if two kidnappers with a gun show up, intending on kidnapping you and your charge. Amy had heard about kidnapped children on TV, but she never even imagined that it would happen to her. To make matters worse, Amy is babysitting three-year-old Kendra at the time. Chocolate for all meals might sound good to you, but its not what a three or a fourteen year old should have as a diet. Or crackers and marshmallows. This tragic adventure tells the tale of an amazing girl who risks her life to save the child in her care, although she has been through a lot herself. This cliff hanging suspense filled book will have you on the edge of your seat as the thrilling adventure continues. This book just amazed me as every page turned. I was under the covers with a flashlight reading this book through the night. Peg Kehret amazes me with not only this book, but also other books like Earthquake Terror or Trapped! I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did! Happy Reading! Stars: 5 out of 5
Author: Karina Yan Glaser Ages: 9 -13 Life isn’t always joyful around the holidays, and the Vanderbeekers know it. It’s bad news when the family of seven, The Vanderbeekers, find out their landlord won’t renew the lease for their apartment. The five children try to purseade evil Mr. Beiderman to let them stay they know they only have until New Years, and it’s 5 days until Christmas, not leaving them much time. As the children try in many different ways to get him to renew their lease, they learn that mean Mr. Beiderman has had a hard past. The children learn important lessons along the way, including to try and try again. This beautifully written story will have you laughing, and crying as the Vanderbeekers story unfolds. This is one of my favorite books. The way the story is written just amazing. This book is definitely for people who like family or sibling adventures, like The Land Of Stories or All-of-a-Kind family. I personally loved this book because it had a really great storyline. I hope you guys like the book as much as I did. Happy Reading! Stars: 4 1/2
Author: Chris Colfer Ages: 9-13 Genre: Fantasy Alex and Connor never expected to fall through a book, especially one that has been in their family for generations. Alex has never had any friends, is her teacher's pet and loves fairy tales. Connor, on the other hand, has many friends, falls asleep in class and constantly is getting detention. But, they both have a love of fairy tales, miss their dad and the stories he used to tell. This book will have you holding your breath as the tragic, and magic story continues. This book was definitely a really good book. This was one of the only books that's been recommended to me by my friends. They all thought this series of seven books was a really great collection of books. Please don't judge this book by the size. You absolutely will love it! Happy Reading! Stars: 4 1/2
Author: Isla Fischer Ages: 7-11 No one expected Marge to be as crazy as she was, especially not seven year old Jemima or four year old Jake. Jemima and Jake are a brother and sister who have never had a babysitter before. But anyone knows Marge is no ordinary sitter. With chocolate soup for dinner or spending the day at the kid's school, Marge can be a bit, well, different. Jemima and Jake discover that Marge loves to have fun, even if that means bending the rules. Which Marge does all the time. This thrilling book gets you laughing out loud as the Adventures with Marge in Charge continue. I really liked this book. This is definitely a book if your having a bad day or just need a little giggle. I needed a laugh one day and i read this book in one day because |
